Transportation ministers across the country are discussing ways to beef up infrastructure to withstand the increased frequency of severe weather events.
The clean-up and repairs continue following heavy rain and snowmelt that overwhelmed roads and culverts on the province’s west coast.
Residents passing through Cape St. George have an extra 80 kms to their trip thanks to a washout at Rouze’s Brook.
Transportation Minister John Abbott says the changing climate and increased severe weather is of great concern in Newfoundland and Labrador and right across the country.
“This year we’re going to be spending up to $288 million, part of that is in making sure that we’re replacing culverts, bigger and stronger, we’re replacing bridges bigger, and stronger so that we can withstand future events like this.”
Repairs on the road in Cape St. George are expected to take another couple of days.
