Expect to see more traffic enforcement cameras popping up across the province in the near future.
Government stated intentions to roll out the cameras in their 2024 budget after running a pilot project in Mount Pearl and Paradise last summer.
Minister responsible for Service NL, Sarah Stoodley, calls the results from last year’s pilot “shocking”, with nearly 100 drivers caught going at least 11 km/h over the posted limit in the run of a day.
Stoodley says they’re still working out the details on locations and cost, but says there’s no doubt they’re needed on the province’s roadways.
She says municipalities from all over the province have contacted her department looking to add the technology in their community. Stoodley says they’ll also be using cameras to crack down on speeding on provincial roadways.
“We do oversee roads that have high speeds, I know one that comes to mind is Veterans Memorial. There’s a lot of very dangerous accidents on Veterans Memorial so if I had to choose one place for the first camera, it might be there.”
Government is hoping to start with speed cameras and eventually add cameras at traffic lights and on school busses.
