The capital city says it’s taken a number of measures to address flooding on a property on Duffett’s Road just off the Trans Canada Highway.
John McDonald and his son Chris raised the matter last month after a thaw and heavy rain caused serious flooding on their property. The younger McDonald says the situation is nothing new and has been an ongoing problem for years.
The city says it sent staff to the area when they learned about the flooding, but claims staff were met by threatening comments from one of the owners. The city says staff continued their investigation and could not find evidence that the flooding was related to recent developments in nearby Galway. Instead, investigators say they found that flooding in the barn was coming from undeveloped land behind the barn that the city does not own.
In terms of development concerns raised by the McDonalds, the city says the developer must provide engineering work to determine how the land on Duffett’s Road will be serviced, design an appropriate road network and identify streams and floodplains.
In a statement provided to VOCM News, the city says those requirements have been communicated “numerous times over the years, but to date, the developer has not completed the required design work to facilitate his development. The city says the “development has not been rejected, rather very little information has been provided for the city to review.”
The family has a lawsuit against the city in relation to a dispute over development of land in the Goulds.
