Skies will be cloudy on the northern half of the Avalon including metro but sunny on the southern Avalon. Clear skies will be the order of the day right across the southern strip from the Southern Shore to the Port aux Basques area.
The sun will also emerge on the west coast, Northern Peninsula, Green Bay-White Bay and Grand Falls-Windsor but Clarenville-Gander-Bonavista will be cloudy.
The Johnson Geo Centre is holding a Sun Block Party this afternoon for those looking to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse.
Around 4 p.m. light from the sun will be completely blocked out for about four minutes as part of a phenomenon not to be seen again until 2079.
Kate Murphy, a Science Interpreter at the Johnson Geo Centre and MUN Botanical Garden, says viewing the solar eclipse in a crowd will add to the excitement and energy of the rare event.
The party will run from 3 to 7 p.m. with numerous activities including face painting and crafts. Large telescopes will be set up and solar glasses are available with admission while supplies last.
