The Federal Government has announced the details of its updated defence policy, Our North, Strong and Free.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Defence Minister Bill Blair made the announcement earlier today.
The plan will see government spend $73-billion over the next two decades, including over $8-billion over the next five years, on six different themes.
The plan will increase defence spending to 1.76 per cent of the GDP by 2029-2030, bringing the country closer to the NATO target of 2 per cent.
Blair says the first priority is ensuring Canada’s sovereignty at home, specifically in arctic and northern regions. He says the funding will go towards new fleets of early warning aircraft and helicopters, infrastructure networks in the north, long range missiles, maritime sensors, and a satellite ground station in the arctic.
