Vacant and run-down housing units in Corner Brook will soon be demolished to make way for 50 new ones to meet the need for affordable housing.
The new one- and two-bedroom homes will be built on Crestview Avenue in the Dunfield Park area of the west coast city.
Area MHA Gerry Byrne notes some of the existing units have been vacant and boarded up for 16 years.
Byrne says a tender has been called for demolition of the buildings, which he says has been a long time coming.

He says the issue dates back to 2007, and while development plans have been in place for some time “it just never got acted upon.”
“With the housing crunch, there was a reluctance to take apartments out of the housing mix while reconstruction or redevelopment occurred but it got to the point where government saw that it could no longer wait on this,” he said.
Construction will begin once demolition is complete, with the new homes expected to be ready for occupancy by 2026.
