The man charged with kidnapping and killing his estranged wife more than a month ago was back before a judge this morning, and this time without a translator.
Thirty-six-year-old Ibrahim Alahmad, originally from Syria, once again appeared in provincial court on video from Her Majesty’s Penitentiary.
He was charged with first-degree murder on March 5th, a few hours after the body of his ex-wife was found in an abandoned house in Outer Cove.
Up until today, Alahmad had made four court appearances in the case, each one with a translator to convert English into his primary language of Arabic.
The interpreter was a no-show, but the matter proceeded anyway, with Alahmad nodding and confirming he understood what was being said, albeit in broken English.
He then held up a white sheet of paper with a list of questions for his Legal Aid lawyer, Jason Edwards, who told the court Alahmad is “confused by the whole process.”
The judge then informed Alahmad that Edwards would contact him after court to address his questions.
While some of the disclosure evidence has been received by the defence, another, more substantial package of information is expected to be ready by next week.
The case will be called again on May 3rd, after the defence has had time to review it.
