One of the largest high school hockey tournaments of the year will get underway in metro next week.
The Royal Newfoundland Regiment Memorial High School Hockey Tournament, formerly the Beaumont Hamel Centennial Cup, runs from Monday through Sunday.
Tournament director Gerard Brennan says this year’s event will see 32 teams—16 boys and 16 girls—compete representing 23 high schools across the province.
Brennan says the tournament has grown so large, this year there will be 80 games, that they had to expand beyond their usual arena—the Paradise Double Ice Complex, to include the Mount Pearl Glacier.
He says most of the changes relate to the girls’ teams. They’ve expanded from 12 teams to 16, and the periods have been extended from 10 minutes to 12. As well, this year there will be bronze medal games.
