Security screeners from 15 airports across Atlantic Canada including eight in Newfoundland and Labrador are taking job action in response to what they say is their employer’s non-payment of wages.
They are members of the United Steelworkers Union and are employed by GardaWorld, a multinational corporation which is funded by the federal government through its Crown corporation, the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority—or CATSA.
The airports in Newfoundland and Labrador which are affected are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake, Stephenville, St. Anthony, Wabush, Goose Bay and Churchill Falls.
At issue is a new electronic pay system fraught with errors, resulting in some workers not receiving their full pay.
The screeners are still showing up for work but are taking measures such as wearing jeans rather than uniform pants, donning brighter colours and sneakers, and not wearing GardaWorld shoulder boards.
