The Uber puns were flying fast and Furey-ous during the launch of the ride-sharing service in this province yesterday.
The premier was just one of many to declare it an “uber-exciting” step toward providing more rides for more people.
Joking aside, heavy hitters from the business community, including the Board of Trade and George Street reps who have great interest in the service, were on hand for the launch in Quidi Vidi Village yesterday.
Uber Canada’s Jake Brockman touted the proven success of Uber in more than a hundred cities across Canada.
But it was his singling out of a much-needed arrangement with the airport that got the most applause.
“Whether it’s a ride across town to run errands, to get to work or school on time, or a safe, late-night ride home after a big night out on George Street, Uber helps people get to where they want to go,” he said. “We’re proud to have an agreement already in place with St. John’s International Airport to facilitate pickups and drop-offs there.”
New Uber driver Tory St. Louis, a former cabbie, says Uber has its advantages for passengers and drivers.
“You don’t have to share your car with a hundred other people, and you can kind of make your car your own office, like your own little spot,” he said. “So you can decorate it. It’s just a little bit more laid back.”
