A successful whale rescue in Trinity Bay over the weekend.
Julie Huntington with the Whale Release and Strandings program says they were called out to New Harbour by a woman who suspected that a whale was entangled in gear in the area.
On closer inspection, they were able to determine that the humpback was caught up in a herring net.
She says it had ropes through its mouth and across its back and with some fishermen standing by for safety, they were able to cut the net away and free the whale.
Huntington says it was as if the animal knew they were trying to help. “It turned over on its side and I think it felt that it was getting freed.”
