The Newfoundland and Labrador dairy industry is moving in a new direction with the launch of a new NL Dairy Co-operative.
The new group was announced at Pondview Farms in the Goulds, with members of the co-op, industry stakeholders, and a host of cows in attendance.
The provincial government is providing a $10 million loan to the group to assist in the acquisition of Agripur’s fluid milk and processing operation in Donovan’s, including the Central Dairies brand.
In total, the co-op will include 19 dairy producers from across the province.
In addition to owning Central Dairies, the co-op will help distribute dairy products on behalf of processors, such as butter and ice cream.
They will also work to expand the availability of local products.
Founding member and Pondview Owner, Crosbie Williams says the formation of the co-op means local dairy farmers will own the industry, and believes it will go down as being “historic” for that industry.
Scott Antle becomes the President and Chief Administrative Officer after nearly two decades as an executive at Browning Harvey. John Moores, who most recently served as general manager of Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador, is also on the leadership team.
