A new report suggests more Canadian kids are turning into couch potatoes when it comes to getting enough physical activity.
The latest ParticipACTION report released this week came with a D+ grade. Dr. Travis Saunders, a member of the ParticipACTION research committee, points to a number of reasons for the poor grade, including too much screen time and climate change.
Saunders says unfavourable weather conditions not only makes outdoor play unappealing, but also dangerous in some cases.
With extreme weather becoming more common, he says organizations and parents need to learn to adapt.
He says sport organizations need to establish policies that ensure a sport will take place in an alternate, indoor setting if there happens to be weather warnings in effect. If it’s a nasty day outside, Saunders says parents still need to find ways to get their kids active rather than just sitting around the house.
