The provincial government has called a news conference for this morning to provide an update on its efforts to protect consumers from skyrocketing power bills due to the cost of the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project.
Energy Minister Andrew Parsons and Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro CEO Jennifer Williams will meet with media later this morning at Confederation Building to discuss the so-called rate mitigation plan.
It’s not clear exactly what the update will entail.
The cost of the Muskrat Falls project, which was years overdue, has more than doubled from its original estimate of $6.2 billion, to more than $13 billion.
Last year, Hydro announced its completion, although there are still recurring issues involving the Labrador-Island Link which hooks up the island with the Muskrat Falls plant in Labrador.
