The province’s police forces will be out on the roads and highways this long weekend watching out for dangerous driving behaviours. The RNC conducted one such operation on the TCH just outside St. john’s this morning.
Behind a large sign near Butterpot Park a lone RNC officer lies in wait.
Speed radar in hand, he looks out at the oncoming traffic, tracking the speeds of potential violators – and there are a lot of them.
At least once every couple of minutes the officer is radioing in the speed of another driver who needs to be pulled over.
A few minutes down the road, in an area where it is safe to do so, a series of flashing police lights can often be seen against the grey foggy conditions, where police are issuing tickets to people with a heavy foot.
RNC Constable James Cadigan says the initiative not only coincides with the May 24th long weekend, but also Canada Road Safety Week.
He says their teams will be moving throughout the region today, with a goal of capturing aggressive and dangerous driving behaviours, and holding drivers accountable.
