One of the most popular hiking trails in the province is facing challenging times in this, its 30th year in existence.
The anniversary brings an urgent need according to the business manager for the East Coast Trail, which winds along the cliffs of the east side of the Avalon Peninsula for miles with breathtaking views.
Julia Penney says recent years have seen an increase in trail usage which, combined with severe weather and the natural aging of the infrastructure, has led to critical wear and tear. She says hikers are encountering broken boards, overgrown pathways, and deteriorating path conditions.

The funding shortfall faced by the trail association allows them to perform only emergency repairs.
They’re asking for financial help from the public through the Trail Raiser Community Hike, corporate sponsorship, straight-up gifts either one-time or recurring, or enrolling as a member.
