The mayor of Stephenville admits plans to redevelop the town’s airport are not moving as fast as he’d like.
A deal to sell the airport to the Dymond Group was finalized last August, with businessman Carl Dymond saying they were going to hit the ground running in terms of turning the facility into one of Atlantic Canada’s biggest airports.
Dymond told VOCM News in February that crews would be on site this spring to install aircraft hangars—but the mayor says things have been quiet.
“We’re sort of at a standstill for the development and the plans that Mr. Dymond had.”
No airlines are currently operating out of the airport. Rose says he’s disappointed to see the area left out of any seasonal route announcements.
The mayor questions why the Stephenville Airport is the only major facility in the province that doesn’t have any airline commitments. He notes that the Bay St. George area makes up a large number of passengers who contribute to the success at Deer Lake Regional.
In the winter, Dymond indicated his intentions to have air access restored in Stephenville by the end of the year.
