The Canadian Hurricane Centre is expecting it to be an active season for named storms in the Atlantic.
Officials are forecasting 17 to 25 named storms this year, about a dozen of which are expected to become hurricanes, and four to seven becoming major hurricanes.
Chris Fogarty of the Canadian Hurricane Centre says unseasonably warm water temperatures are the driving force behind the active season.
He says the current temperatures in the Atlantic Ocean are what they’d expect to see in August.
While forecasters have an idea of the level of storm activity, Fogarty says it’s near impossible to provide a detailed outlook on how Atlantic Canada will fare over the next few months.
What each storm entails and where it will end up is something they can’t predict, but he expects Atlantic Canada will have to contend with a couple of heavy storms due to it being such an active year.
Hurricane season runs from early June until the end of November.
