The provincial government is moving forward with the implementation of speed cameras across the province.
Legislative changes to the Highway Traffic Act are receiving second reading in the House of Assembly today, which will give the vendor chosen to install and implement the cameras the necessary enforcement powers and authority to issue tickets electronically.
Once the changes receive royal assent, the government will issue an RFP for a vendor to install and manage the cameras.
Digital Government and Service NL Minister Sarah Stoodley says they will start with 10 cameras, making sure the process moves smoothly, and then add more over time.
Stoodley says they haven’t finalized where the cameras are going as of yet, but most of those will likely be on the Avalon. She says the goal is to improve public safety, and because of the pilot project conducted last summer they know there are a lot of areas in the region with excessive speeds.
Following the initial 10, Stoodley hopes to see the project ramp up very quickly.
A speed camera pilot project was carried out in Mount Pearl and Paradise last summer, with 94,000 drivers clocked going at speeds 10 km/h over the posted limit.
