Premier Andrew Furey is responding to questions on whether a general election could be in the offing later this year with yet another seat set to become vacant in the House of Assembly.
Health Minister and Waterford Valley MHA Tom Osborne announced on Friday that he plans to retire in July.
That leaves government with two options—hold a by-election—which would be the fourth this calendar year, or call a general election.
When asked if a general election is possible, Premier Andrew Furey stuck to the messaging he’s had about election rumours since last year, that he and his team are “firmly focused on working for the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
When asked specifically about if Waterford Valley will be contested in a by-election, the Premier says “that’s the way it looks,” noting that they are excited to see people like Jamie Korab putting their names in the hat.
