Among those who made the pilgrimage to Beaumont Hamel this week to accompany the remains of an unknown soldier back home to Newfoundland, was PC MHA Lloyd Parrott a veteran himself.
Parrott delivered a very moving, and personal speech to the House of Assembly yesterday about what the trip to the trenches meant to him.
He remarked on the young ages engraved into line after line of headstones, and described the impact his first visit to the trenches had on him, exposing wounds he didn’t know he had.
Our deepest gratitude to MHA @lloyd_parrott for his service.
His journey to France to bring home an unknown soldier reminds us of the ultimate sacrifice made by many. Thank you for ensuring our heroes are never forgotten. #LestWeForget pic.twitter.com/SIR1MBbkvJ

“The most emotional time I had” he told fellow members in the House, was “within the first 500 meters of entering the park, we walked through the trail, and we walked down into a trench, and I wept like a child.”
Parrott offered his thanks to the Royal Canadian Legion and government for the experience. Parrott concluded by reciting the closing lines of In Flanders Fields, his voice breaking with emotion.
