Speed cameras should be in place across parts of Newfoundland and Labrador by the fall, and violators will be subject to some hefty fines according to the Minister of Digital Government and Service NL.
Necessary changes to the Highway Traffic Act received second reading in the House of Assembly yesterday. Once given Royal Assent, government will issue an RFP for a company to install and maintain the technology.
During a pilot project last year in Mount Pearl and Paradise, some 94,000 drivers were clocked doing at least 10 km/h over the posted limit.
Last year, fines weren’t handed out, but with the system coming in full force, Sarah Stoodley says those who speed will be fined.
She says the fines will be based on a progressive scale based on a driver’s recorded speed. Between 11 and 20 km/h over will receive a $200 fine, and the maximum a person can receive for multiple offences will be $1,900.
