Nearly 1,600 child care workers across the province will soon have access to medical benefits.
Minister Krista Lynn Howell made the announcement this afternoon on the heels of Early Childhood Educators Week.
The plan is expected to cost government $1.8 million annually, which will be funded through the province’s $306 million early learning and child care agreement with Ottawa.
Howell says the coverage will be available to staff at regulated facilities and will be managed by the Association of Early Childhood Educators Newfoundland and Labrador.

Details on what the plan will look like will be worked out within the coming weeks.
She says the association will be working on securing the plan that provides the best benefits for staff. Howell says they hope it will not only provide some relief to current workers, but will also attract more people to the child care sector.
The minister says they hope to have everything up and running by the fall.
