A special event takes place this afternoon to mark an historic and pivotal moment in the history of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
It was March of 1974 when the first female members of the RCMP enlisted in the force.
Inspector Tracey Edwards of the RCMP commends those first female officers.
“We have to honour them for the trails they blazed and the barriers they broke, making a path for every woman who would follow in their footsteps in the RCMP as police officers, including me.”
Veteran members of Troop 17 will march today from the Sheraton Hotel to Government House this afternoon at 1:30 to mark the occasion.
Assistant Commissioner of the RCMP in Newfoundland and Labrador, Jennifer Ebert, and retired Staff Sergeant Gail Courtney, a veteran of Troop 17, will be among those on hand for today’s event.
