One-stop calling for an ambulance kicks in tomorrow for the entire province.
As of June 1, people who need an ambulance must call 911, instead of the local number, under the province’s new integrated provincial ambulance service.
Nearly 500 workers, previously employed by private ambulance operators, are now employees of the provincial government, bringing the full complement to 850.
All ambulances will be coordinated and dispatched through NL Health Services, with previously called numbers being discontinued in favour of 911 province-wide.
The government has issued a request for proposals for a single firm to design, manage and operate a single, integrated road and air ambulance service. Two bids are being evaluated, with a decision expected later this year.
That operator will be responsible for managing the program, staff and budget on behalf of the provincial health authority.
