The province is looking at the possibility of prohibiting the sale of tobacco to anyone born after a certain date to create what some are calling a ‘tobacco-free generation,’ a concept that has been introduced in some other jurisdictions.
It’s also looking at increasing the legal age to purchase tobacco products to 21, and blocking the sale of tobacco through vending machines.
Public consultations have been launched for input and recommendations on legislative amendments focused on the purchase of tobacco and related products.
An online questionnaire will be available on the provincial government’s engagement page in early June, seeking input from the public, health care organizations and industry representatives.
Opportunities will also be available to provide feedback on vaping products.
