The Groundfish Industry Development Council is joining with those disappointed over DFO’s decision to allocate most of the Unit 1 redfish quota in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to the offshore fleet.
The founder and CEO of the Barry Group, Bill Barry, says inshore harvesters, processing companies and communities were looking forward to “a more equitable distribution” of the resource among all fleets.
In recent years inshore groundfish and shrimp fleets have faced significant challenges due to dwindling stocks, and the fleets had hoped that redfish would help to alleviate their economic difficulties.
The Groundfish Industry Development Council will closely monitor other allocation decisions by DFO to “ensure fairness” for those living closest to the respective resources.
