Riverside Drive in Corner Brook, which had been closed due to a landslide earlier this spring, has been temporarily re-opened to through traffic due to an overturned tanker and fuel spill on the ramp on the Lewin Parkway earlier today.
The size of the spill is extensive according to recent aerial footage from the area. The highway will remain closed in the area for the next few hours while the clean up is underway. In the meantime, drivers are being diverted through Corner Brook.
A portion of the Trans Canada Highway is closed to traffic while clean-up crews attend to what police are calling a “substantial fuel spill.”
The City of Corner Brook says eastbound traffic on the TCH can enter Corner Brook through Exit 5 near Massey Drive, follow through to Confederation Drive and turn left onto the Lewin Parkway at the lights. Traffic can then take the exit onto Riverside Drive and exit the city if they choose to continue on.
Meanwhile, westbound traffic can turn onto Exit 7 at the Man in the Mountain, and follow Riverside Drive to the Lewin Parkway, then take the Lewin Parkway to Highway 450 and exit past Watson’s Pond Industrial Park, or follow the Lewin Parkway and Confederation Drive to Massey Drive.
Work on Riverside Drive is still needed and the road will close again once the current spill is cleared up.
