It’s not uncommon to see a licence plate with peeling paint or other defects, but failure to get a replacement from motor vehicle could result in a fine from police.
RNC Constable James Cadigan says it’s important that a plate number is legible for numerous reasons.
He says it’s important for public safety as it identifies who may be involved in incidents such as collisions. The plate allows police to identify suspects and witnesses who may be able to help with various investigations.
Cadigan says officers have been actively ticketing drivers for improper plates. He says it is the responsibility of the driver to get their plate replaced or to remove any obstructions like dirt or plate covers.
