Newfoundland and Labrador’s new disability benefit goes far beyond what is being offered at the federal level, according to one parent and advocate.
Last week the province announced $26 million for the new initiative. It begins on January 1st with a Registered Disability Savings Program contribution of $100 per month.
Then, on July 1, 2025 those who qualify can receive up to $400 per month.
Dennis Gill, who’s the father of an adult living with disabilities, also sits on the Inclusion Canada board. He’s impressed with the program, especially when compared to what Ottawa is offering.
He says the board was “very disappointed” to hear that the federal government is offering up to $200. He says “little Newfoundland and Labrador” is offering twice that, plus the RDSP contribution, which he believes will be well-received.
