A senator from this province has been working closely with a survivor of intimate partner violence to establish a national prevention strategy.
Georgina McGrath, who is from this province, approached Senator Fabian Manning in 2017 to share her experience as a victim of intimate partner violence, with hopes that there was something the federal government could do to enhance prevention.
Manning told VOCM’s the Tim Powers Show that he and McGrath have been working to get a national prevention strategy in place.
He says the biggest issue they’re focused on is a lack of support for those experiencing abuse.
He says it’s not as easy as enforcing something like mandatory reporting when a victim arrives at a hospital with injuries possibly stemming from abuse. Often times there are things that prevent a victim from leaving, like lack of financial support, children and fear. Manning says legislation is needed to address those factors preventing victims from seeking help.
