Ferry service to northern Labrador was supposed to begin yesterday, but that wasn’t the case due to the Kamutik W providing service on the Fogo Island run a few weeks ago.
The vessel has since been removed from the Fogo run, but is now sitting in St. John’s Harbour.
The Kamutik W runs on a seasonal basis and is essential for transporting goods and necessities to isolated areas of the big land.
The MHA for Torngat Mountains, Lela Evans, says government fails to see the importance of the shipping season, and calls the recent reassignment of the vessel intentional bad planning.
She says residents are concerned about a potential food shortage, made worse after the main grocery store in Makkovik burned down earlier this month.
