Firefighters continue to battle two out-of-control forest fires burning north of Labrador City.
Provincial Duty Officer Laurie Holloway says the fire at Menihek Lake is estimated to be 500 hectares in size, and is located about 160 km from Lab City. The second fire, Milner Lake, is 100 km from Lab City and is estimated to be 1,000 hectares in size.
She says the second fire is not a priority—because “there are no values at risk” so Menihik Lake is getting more attention. She says they have two waterbombers and a helicopter on the scene now fighting the blaze.
Holloway says the weather has been nice in the region and the fire hazard index is listed as high, but conditions may change in their favor over the next few days as showers move in. That, combined with air suppression, will help.
