One of three companies and two supervisors charged after a mistake during blasting at a gravelpit almost three years ago have pleaded guilty and been fined for their crimes.
The “misfire” occurred at a Weir’s Construction pit along the Trans-Canada Highway in September of 2021, showering an area beyond the safe zone with rock and other debris.
Four vehicles, two loaders and a crusher were damaged, but it was sheer luck that no one was seriously injured or killed, according to the agreed statement of facts read into the court record yesterday.
Yesterday, explosives company Dyno Nobel, a supervisor, and the certified blaster each pleaded guilty to safety violations and were slapped with fines of $18,400, $1,000 and $3,000 respectively.
The other two companies charged in the blast — Weir’s Construction and Triple J Aggregates, along with Weir’s owner Bill Weir — have maintained their innocence and pleaded not guilty.
Their trial is scheduled for November.
