The province is providing grants for communities to commemorate the repatriation of the Unknown Soldier.
The remains were removed from the battlefields of France where he fell and were repatriated to Newfoundland and Labrador for interment in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier where he will symbolically represent every Newfoundlander and Labradorian who lost their life in war.
The grants are available to communities across the province to help with the purchase of a memorial wreath to be laid during Memorial Day ceremonies.
This July 1 will mark the 100th anniversary of the National War Memorial in St. John’s, dedicated to the sacrifices made in WWI.
Princess Anne, the Colonel-in-Chief of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and President of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, will attend this year’s ceremonies in St. John’s.
