The mayor of Fogo Island calls the delay in getting the MV Veteran back on the Fogo Island-Change Islands run “intolerable.”
Andrew Shea told VOCM Open Line with Paddy Daly that the town has written Premier Andrew Furey and Transportation Minister John Abbott requesting an emergency meeting regarding the situation.
“We also contacted Bell Island,” so that “Fogo Island and Bell Island can work together to try to straighten this out.”
Shea accuses government of doing the same thing “over and over” and expecting different results.
“Our ferry is scheduled to go off in the winter for three months – that’s the big boat – and Bell Island has lost its enhanced service, plus she’s (MV Legionnaire) supposed to go on drydock for three to six months, so all this is going to happen again next year and we’re going to be in the, excuse the pun, same boat again.”
The MV Veteran was supposed to begin sea trials last week after more than five weeks in drydock undergoing maintenance, but no further update has been provided on the status of that ferry.
