A ceremony will be held this morning in St. John’s to mark one of the worst marine disasters in the history of the Spanish fishery.
The trawler Villa de Pitanxo capsized in the early-morning hours of February 15th, 2022 on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland.
Three crew members were rescued from a life raft, but 21 lives were lost.
Family members and the Spanish ambassador in Canada, Alfredo Martinez Serrano, are in the capital city to attend the unveiling of a memorial at Harbourside Park this morning at 11:30 a.m.
Lt-Gov. Joan Marie Aylward, provincial and federal officials, the Spanish Assistant Deputy Minister of Fisheries, the Director General of Fisheries of the Regional Government of Galicia, and the Director General of Assistance to Spanish Citizens Abroad and Consular Affairs will also attend.
Then on Saturday at 11 a.m., they will attend a service marking the tragedy at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist.
Members of the public are invited to attend both ceremonies.
