NL Hydro has provided another update on the forest fires near Churchill Falls.
In the most recent update around 9 a.m. this morning, officials said the situation remains stable with the fire still burning on the south side of the river.
They say resources will continue to focus on suppression efforts today, stating “the response remains highly co-ordinated and we continue to support the ongoing needs of those who have been displaced.”
More than 500 residents were evacuated late Wednesday, first to Happy Valley-Goose Bay and later to the homes of friends and families in the area.
That evacuation order remains in place.
NL Hydro says operations at the generating station in Churchill Falls remain unaffected and the facility is not at immediate risk.
However, in a statement the utility said smoke remains an ongoing concern.
“While the towers in the area are steel structures, smoke can impact components on the lines (the insulators) resulting in trips. Teams are examining potential scenarios and working to mitigate any potential customer impact, should smoke conditions result in a trip.
“We will keep our customers in Labrador updated and are sharing preparedness information on our social channels.”
CEO Jennifer Williams says operations are status quo but admits smoke also remains a concern for their crews on site,
Williams says she spoke with the premier via zoom Friday night, adding those workers are proud to provide such an important service.
“That’s how I feel about what they are doing,” Williams says. “But we are thinking about their rest, and how to provide opportunities to switch them out so they can see family.
“But at this point I think they’re feeling quite good about being able to provide a really important function at this time, and we are incredibly grateful for that.”
