The Province’s Heavy Civil Association and Construction Safety Association have teamed up for a new initiative to promote safety in construction zones.
The “Cones Out?” campaign looks to shine a light on the roles that construction workers play in keeping people safe, and promote safe driving practices in construction zones.
Communications and Industry Relations Manager with the Construction Safety Association, Tammy McCabe, says the campaign came about from the concerns they’ve been hearing from people in the industry.
She says they’re hearing concerns about distracted driving, speeding, aggressive driving and a “lack of respect” for construction zones and the people in them.
On the latter point, McCabe and Construction Safety Association CEO Cherie Whelan share some of the disrespect workers have been faced with.
Whelan and McCabe say they’ve heard stories of people having coffee thrown on them, being spat on, and verbal abuse. They both say those workers are “just doing their job” and people would think about construction zones as that person’s work place.
