The president of NL Hydro admits an anomaly that left Wabush in the dark for a prolonged period has been a learning moment.
Labrador wildfires caused a trip on the lines from Churchill Falls, leaving much of Lab West without power. But while Lab City was able to access backup from Fermont, Quebec, the Wabush station was not compatible.
Power has since been restored to Wabush, but Hydro CEO Jennifer Williams says they’re working on a longer-term solution.
“The Fermont power was a good match for the Lab City station; not a good match for the existing infrastructure and existing protection settings, for example, for serving Wabush,” she said. “So we’re trying to come up with new solutions to alter things in the Wabush station to allow for that Fermont power to be shared amongst the two stations.”
Williams says any work to adapt the Wabush station would require a study and testing down the road.
But she cautioned there’s likely not enough power from Fermont to power both towns.
