A driver on the Burin Peninsula is under investigation for impaired driving after two police officers were injured trying to avoid a head-on collision.
The situation unfolded just before 9 a.m. Wednesday morning in Grand Bank.
Two marked RCMP police cruisers were travelling down the Burin Peninsula Highway with their emergency equipment activated when a vehicle in the oncoming lane crossed the center line.
The first cruiser swerved to avoid a head-on collision, and the second vehicle crashed into the first, injuring two officers.
A third police vehicle located the driver and attempted to pull them over, but they failed to stop and fled the scene in a dangerous manner. In the interest of public safety, the police did not pursue.
The vehicle was located and stopped by police a short time later in Marystown.
They say the driver showed signs of drug impairment and was arrested.
At the detachment a drug recognition evaluation was completed.
The results of the test are pending to determine if charges of impaired are appropriate.
In the meantime, the driver has been released from custody and will appear in court later on charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and resisting arrest.
The two injured officers are recovering form their injuries.
