The Innu Nation is becoming an even bigger player in the fishery in Newfoundland and Labrador with the acquisition of a fish company in Conception Bay.
The Innu Nation, through its fishing company arm, has purchased all shares of the Harbour Grace Shrimp Company. That transaction will give the Innu access to the offshore shrimp fishery through ownership of one of 17 offshore licenses. In addition, Innu will have greater access to Greenland halibut, Atlantic halibut, northern cod, yellowtail and redfish.
The Innu Nation says it has long argued for fair access to adjacent fish resources.
Gregory Rich, the CEO of the Labrador Innu Fishing Company, says the acquisition will position them to be key players in the offshore fishery and bring long-term benefits to their two communities.
The Innu company will now have access to more than 200 metric tonnes of additional turbot quota, additional halibut, and an offshore shrimp allocation.
