Those who run the health care system are making changes to a program to enhance access to virtual care for those living in rural areas of the province. NL Health Services are also adding pulmonary rehabilitation services and home-based care for people living with lung disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.)
The Comprehensive Respiratory Care Program is evidence-based, and aligns closely with several key principles of the Health Accord, says Ashley Ryan, a manager at the organization.
Bridging acute and community-based care provides patients with tools to better manage their disease, and prevent hospital admissions and emergency room visits according to Health Services.
The program, which has been in existence for about the past five years, has grown significantly in the past two years, says Health Services. It ids now offered in the eastern, central and Labrador-Grenfell zones. Last month, members of the team visited Nain.
Ashley Ryan says they have shown that they can replicate this model of care across the entire province, empowering patients to better manage their lung health.
