The local South Sudanese community will be gathering in Pippy Park today to celebrate their country’s independence day.
The east African nation officially gained independence from Sudan on this day in 2011, with celebrations taking place every July 9 thereafter.
Aluel Achiek, who is originally from South Sudan, says the celebrations back home are like no other with food, music and other cultural events.
She says they’re trying to bring a piece of home to the small, tight-knit community now living in this province.
Achiek believes the small community has started to come together more and hopes their local celebrations will continue to grow.
Those outside the community are also welcome to take part in today’s celebration at Pippy Park, which runs from noon until 9 p.m.
