The RNC is praising the response to a harrowing ordeal for a 19-year-old man who found himself in a dangerous predicament on the province’s west coast.
Emergency responders were called out around 6:00 Monday evening after the 19-year-old, who was out exploring, became stranded on a rock face at Rattling Brook Falls near York Harbour.
Responding RNC officers immediately recognized the predicament the man was in and called for added support from the Corner Brook and York Harbour/Lark Harbour fire departments as well as Bay of Islands Search and Rescue and the Emergency Services Division of the Department of Public Safety.
RNC Constable James Cadigan says ultimately, they had to call in the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre to airlift the stranded man to safety.
He called it “a substantial high-risk response.” While the high angle rescue team from Corner Brook was called in, they determined that a helicopter was needed. “A ton of expertise (was) involved, and luckily we were able to see a positive outcome for this individual.”
The young man was airlifted to safety by helicopter around 1:30 Tuesday morning and reunited with his family. There were no injuries.
