A research scientist at the Marine Institute cautions that cod stocks are “not out of the woods yet” despite having moved from the critical to the cautious zone.
The FFAW is in a battle with Ottawa to reverse its decision to have a commercial cod fishery this year.
Tyler Eddy told the Tim Powers Show that there hasn’t necessarily been a recovery of the stock.
He notes that the threshold has just been crossed from the critical to the cautious zone, and the stock is still far away from the healthy zone. He says there is still a 20 percent probability that the stock is still in the critical zone, and while there has been some growth since 2015 those rates have stabilized.
