The forest fires burning in Labrador was one of a number of items on the agenda when Premier Andrew Furey met with Quebec Premier Francois Legault in Halifax.
The Council of the Federation, a gathering of provincial and territorial leaders, is taking place this week in the Nova Scotia capital.
Furey says he thanked Legault for the assistance provided by the Quebec government.
“We’re quite grateful for the support that they’ve provided,” Furey told VOCM News. “For Churchill Falls and for Lab City currently they have active waterbombers…fighting the western front and our waterbombers are in the eastern front.”
Premier Furey says the Category One fire is not changing for the time-being and evacuees are being supported on the ground in Happy Valley-Goose Bay along with added financial support announced today.
Furey also offered his thanks to all those who have been offering assistance to people on the ground.
“We are so grateful” says Furey “for the hard-working heroes on the front line and behind the scenes. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting so many people helping other people in the shelters in Happy Valley-Goose Bay,” along with the fire officials who are doing the fire modeling, as well as those “on the ground, (and the) pilots. It’s just an incredible team effort.”
