Additional security will be in place at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee today where former U.S. President Donald Trump will make his first public appearance since an attempted assassination on Saturday.
The FBI, Secret Service and other law enforcement are on high alert after Trump was injured in a shooting at a rally in Pennsylvania that left one dead and other supporters injured.
U.S. President Joe Biden says he has spoken with Trump, who he says is doing well after the attack. Biden says he has instructed additional security to accompany the former president.
Biden also ordered a review of all security measures for this week’s convention. Over 2,400 delegates are set to attend the convention where Trump is expected to be named the Republican Party’s candidate in the upcoming presidential election.
Former classmates of a 20-year-old Pennsylvania man who was killed by agents after trying to assassinate Trump, considered him to be a lone wolf who mostly kept to himself and didn’t have a lot of friends.
The FBI has not yet identified any underlying ideology or threatening writing or social media posts from suspected shooter Thomas Matthew Crooks. Public court records show that he had no past criminal cases against him.
Federal public safety minister Dominic LeBlanc says Canada’s security apparatus is “exercising increased vigilance” following the deadly shooting.
LeBlanc says he spoke with officials from Public Safety Canada, the commissioner of the RCMP and the director of CSIS.
