Thirty-five minutes. That’s all it took to give away 2,000 pounds of fresh cod at the St. John’s Waterfront this morning.
The fish came from the stewardship fishery and was given away as a form of protest over Ottawa’s decision to re-establish a commercial cod fishery which allows offshore draggers and foreign fleets back in. Many accuse the offshore boats of decimating the cod stock.
The FFAW says it’s better to go back to the sentinel fishery than to allow the big boats back in. The union says any commercial fishery should be designed so that the first 115,000 metric tonnes go to inshore and Indigenous.
The union says the turnout shows how important cod is to people in this province. They regret not being able to give everyone a bit of fish this morning, but say the 2,000 pounds will go a long way to putting some good food on the table.
