An Indigenous group is the latest to pressure the federal government to reconsider the resumption of the commercial cod fishery.
Offshore draggers are going to be allowed in, but that’s the same group that some in the industry believe is responsible for the demise of the cod stock.
The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the FFAW and others accuse Ottawa of making a grave mistake, saying the 19,000 metric tonnes should go entirely to inshore and Indigenous.
Qalipu First Nation Chief Jenny Brake says at no point were the Indigenous people of the province consulted. Had there been consultation, The Mi’Kmaq people would have recommended a much different allocation regime.
Chief Brake says much of the fishery resources are going to offshore fleets which provide little to no benefit to the local economy.
